How Does Kidney Cancer Happen?

Cancer is the disease that occurs when bad cells in the body grow and increase in numbers in an uncontrolled manner. Kidney or renal cancer is the type of disease that starts in kidneys. It may happen to people of all the ages. The commonest type of kidney cancer is known as renal cell carcinoma, and it generally happens in adults. This kidney cancer starts in tiny filters in the kidneys. The commonest kidney cancer in children is known as Wilms’ tumor.

Who Can Get Kidney Cancer?

There are a few factors that raise the risk of getting the kidney cancer. For example, kidney cancer occurs most often in the people older than 40 years of age. There are various other factors for kidney cancer:

•  Smoking : If a person smoke cigarettes and cigars, the risk for the kidney cancer is twice than that of non-smokers.

•  Being Male : Males are about two times more prone than females to getting kidney cancer

•  Being Obese : Extra weight may cause changes to the hormones that raise the risk

•  Using Pain Medications For The Long Time : This includes few other (specially pain killers) drugs in addition to prescription drugs

•  Having Certain Genetic Conditions : such as von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease

Having High Blood Pressure: Doctors don't know whether high blood pressure or medication used to treat it is the source of the increased risk

Having the above risk factors doesn’t mean the person would get kidney cancer. And it's also true that one may have none of them but still get the disease.

How Is It Diagnosed?

Once you notice symptoms (blood in the urine, a lump in the lower back, persistent pain in your lower back on one side, fatigue, loss of appetite and unexplained weight loss, anemia), or as part of the routine examination, the doctor can use the following tests to diagnose for kidney cancer:

The physical examination of the patient:

1. Blood Test : Abnormal readings in the blood analysis – particularly RBCs count, blood calcium or liver enzyme readings may be indications of kidney cancer.

2. Urine Lab Test (urinalysis) : A sample of the urine is taken and analyzed for precancerous or cancerous cells or the biomarkers indicating the kidney cancer.

3. Biopsy : Surgical removal of the suspicious tissues for advanced examination

Biopsy

A kidney biopsy is the procedure used to take out kidney tissue for the laboratory analysis. The term “renal” describes kidneys, so the renal biopsy is also known or termed as kidney biopsy. The examinations help the doctor to identify the type of kidney disease one is affected by, how fatal it is, and best kidney cancer treatment for it. A kidney biopsy may also be used to scrutinize the usefulness of kidney treatments and to observe if there are any complications present following the kidney transplant.

A kidney biopsy may identify what is creating problem with the normal kidney function. If the routine urine and blood tests indicate that kidneys are not doing their function properly, the doctors decide to perform the renal biopsy. The doctor may also order biopsy test to:

•    Know the reason for abnormal level of waste in blood

•    Observe if the kidney tumor is benign or malignant

•    Examine the cause blood in urine (hematuria)

•    Decide the cause of high protein level in urine (proteinuria)

•    Severity of kidney failure and how speedily the kidneys are worsening
